Armani ad -primary souce, mason conley

“Diamonds are a girls best friend” Could be a caption to this photo. The Armani brand ran this advertisement for their new fragrance, which has a confident smiling man as its main feature. The second most noticeable feature is the woman to the right grasping onto him as he makes his way through a crowd. The look on her face is one of amazement, almost in awe of him. The image around him is hectic but around the subject it seems calm and cool. His tie and jacket give an upscale look, a portrayal of success in his life, but the looseness of the tie and the overall style give a more laid-back, poised demeanor. The man to his left is wearing sunglasses, but the scene is obviously at night, learned culture tells us that he must be some sort of agent, security perhaps. Flash bulbs burst overhead, letting us know whatever is happening is important. Everyone around him is dressed in a like manner, on one hand it would not be an Armani ad if they were not, but it most likely lends itself to where the photo was taken, somewhere you might find this man on a Saturday night… wearing Diamonds.

  1. I really like your idea that the ad displays the common conception "Diamonds are a girls best friend." Clearly, the girl in the ad really wants the man who is (we assume) wearing the Diamonds cologne. An exact repetition I noticed that could be useful is the hands on and around him. There are arms and hands on his left and right trying to grab him. Over his head, a hand holds a flashing camera, and another hand is out - maybe trying to catch his attention. Your understanding of his upscale look might be explained by the shiny fabric that both the lining of his suit and his tie are made out of. Other places one can see shine is the woman's hair next to him, the flash going off over his head, and the bottle of cologne in the bottom left corner. The fact that the photo is black and white and not in color might also be something to be considered.
