Kyle Jones- Summaries for Primary Analyses

My first Primary source that I found is a song called "Knocked Up" by Kings of Leon. By glancing at the name of the song you might think that it is kind of absurd, but this song is actually very deep in meaning and has much room for analyzation. The lyrics tell the story of a relationship between a girl and a guy that I assume to be young because the content of the song implies so. The girl has become pregnant with this man's child, and the parents of both do not approve of this relationship. This pregnancy appears to be an unintentional one that has occurred at an inopportune time. The line from the song that says "always mad and usually drunk, but I love her like no other", imply that he may even be an alcoholic which complicates the situation even more. Although this is a hard situation for both the male and female and their parents, the man is willing to do what it takes to make it work. This song shows that when your are in love there is not much that can take that emotion away from you, and you would even be willing to change your life to keep this love.

My second source is a quote from the author Chuck Palahniuk who wrote the book "Fight Club". The quote says "The one you love and the one who loves you are never, ever the same person." The reason I chose this quote is because I think this is a very common theme in today's society. In movies, books, and even in real life these love triangles pop up everywhere. People are always chasing the person they think they love when there is someone else that feels the same way about them, but they are just to blind to realize it. Also, many people confuse their feelings of "love" with feelings of lust. In today's society there are not many people that know exactly what love is, and in a reality it can never truly be defined.

  1. On the first primary source I think it is important to note the repetition of the line "People call us renegades/ Cause we like living crazy". In culture today, most people would discourage a couple like this to stay together. Two people clearly with issues, including alcoholism, no money or support from their family and a baby on the way isn't the ideal beginning of a family in our culture. However, it also shows they must clearly love each other to not listen to what everyone else is pressuring them to be. Clearly, sometimes your feelings transcend what the world/ your family think your life should be.

I think the second source would need to be longer than just one quote to be a useful source for this paper, maybe a larger section would be more easily analyzed. However, I think the analysis of this quote could be very interesting.

  2. The first source is kind of an inverse of traditional love. At the beginning it repeats twice of “baby”. Generally, baby is considered as the outcome of love between a couple. However the song tells a story between two young people who haven’t married yet but already going to have a baby, which is also a phenomenon happens sometimes in nowadays society. Usually, like the meaning of “renegades”, most people are against such behavior and consider it isn’t the mainstream of society. In the song, the repetition of “where we gonna go” implies the perplexity of man. Although he starts to think about their uncertain future, in the situation of no money, no support from families and even the criticizing from others, he still doesn’t have a plan to face the sudden baby. And people may think if it is still reasonable to have baby just because he loves her.

I think the quote actually tells a fact of the society, but such situation might results from the lack of understanding of love and irrational psychology. “never” and “ever” might be too absolute because there are still a lot of people who love each other.

  3. I think that the first primary source is to point out what breaking down the rhetoric of love in pop culture means. Nowadays, there are numerous similar examples in the mass media such as moives, TV shows and TV dramas. The song shows us the current trend of "love", which is uncontrollable, instantly conducted without any considerations. Even though the behavior of the couple in the sone is not morale, the public consumes the song, exactly the concept of the "love", to enjoy listening to the song in pop culture.

I guess that the second source is also a good source to describe what "love" means in pop culture. With the help of the mass media, the public is easily affected by the current trend such as the quote in the second primary source. Due to the flood of the information provided by the mass media, the public cannot get a chance to consider what true "love" is. In pop culture, everything is easily consumed and produced. Unfortunately, the love becomes the subject to be modified and to be lost the true value due to the pop culture.
