Question 5-

The Axe advertisements that many of us have seen in the past are usually interesting and spawn smiles and laughs, but the question is, does it really do anything to sell the product? Yes, this is a great way to sell a product. Getting a product name stuck in someone’s head helps sell products in every industry. Without seeing interesting commercials I tend not to buy some products, because, subconsciously, I feel that I associate advertising campaigns with quality products. It also helps to see half naked women parading around on television to sell a product that is supposed to make men smell attractive.

Women as an advertising aid for men’s products can sometimes seem degrading in a way, but it really grabs the attention of the men watching. The initial thought that usually comes to mind is wishing you could be around those women yourself. Even though its common sense that just using a specific product won’t get women to crawl all over men, a good smelling product could never hurt. Personally I use Old Spice products because I think Axe smells overpowering, but I do get compliments from women based on how I smell. This shows that using products that smell good to spur a woman’s interest is realistic; Axe just takes this basic idea to an extreme. The extremity of this idea is highlighted by the commercials ending “Smell More Get More.” This phrase is interesting and has a nice ring, but isn’t the best way to go. Telling a man the more overpowering he smells the more women will want to be around him. I don’t know about everyone, but subtle smells are more attractive. Smells that are totally overpowering will drive people away, especially if those scents are used in excess.

  1. I think that your comments about subtlely smelling nice are interesting considering how this contrasts the goal of the advertisement posted. The Axe ad gives the audience an idea that the more the better, which I agree, is very rarely the case (not just with smells, but also in other regards).

  2. I agree with what you've said. Having a catchy message that will get stuck in the viewer's head is a great advertising technique. When you have lyrics to a song stuck in your head, you tend to want to hear that song and you begin to favor that song. The more familiar you are with something, the more you favor it. Also, this is a commercial for men. It could be viewed as degrading to women but this commercial isn't for them. Men are known to favor beautiful women and seeing the women will catch the attention of the men. The commercial encourages the consumer to spray a lot of axe when using it, as the man did. However, i agree that subtlety is smells is more pleasant than a smell that's overpowering.

  3. What is one of the main reasons men groom themselves, use deodorant, spray cologne or spray Axe? Men do these things in the knowledge that women prefer good smelling, clean men. This Ad is a huge over exaggeration of this, however it's still a reflection of this often times overlooked reasoning behind men's hygenic habits. The beautiful big breasted women running in bikinis also helps to get the product stuck in your brain.

  4. I would definitely have to agree with your mention of the over-powering smell. Spraying that much Axe all over would give me a headache! But I think the ridiculous amount he is spraying is humorous. The fact that the product isn't displayed much until closer to the end makes people (especially men) watch all the way through, especially so they can get information on what women want THAT badly.

  5. mt first thought was where are they all goin? and why? the continuous spray leads people to believe, through this ad, that more axe equals more women. maybe the over-use of the product shown leads to higher sales due to guys running out faster. hah.

  6. I agree with what Kyle says on all aspects. This ad does get my attention with all the beautiful women running towards this man. First thought that came to my head was, "man why can't that be me?", and then I saw it was an axe commercial. Right away this made me want to get some axe spray. It got the name of the brand in my head, and I feel that when people see this brand on the shelf at a store they are more likely to buy it.

  7. I think Axe does a great job advertising their product, it catches attention to the male audience who wonder where these beautiful women are going. I totally agree with Kyle completely about scent overpowering, more definately isn't better, to me atleast. However, telling men more is better will lead them to spray more. Therefore men will be running out of the product and purchasing more! How interesting and trick advertisement can really be!

  8. The ad is very over the top but in a way it is trying to point out something without being subtle about it. Women like men that smell good. Not all men wear cologne and this is trying to get them to try something new and buy their product. The fact that this is overly exaggerated helps the product stick in people's mind then if it just showed a girl telling a guy that he smelled good.

  9. Most men will definitely want to smell good so ladies would be around them always and if Axe gives people the chance, why not? I think the commercial is effective because many people will watch it (especially men because of the half-naked ladies) and some of them will want to try it out. It may be over the top but it draws may viewers.

  10. I find it interesting that you prefer subtlety to strong scents, and in a way I agree with that. You never want to walk into a room and smell someone from 20 feet away. It sort of drives me away from that person. When a person applies AXE body spray though, they just keep spraying and spraying. I guess this is helpful to AXE though, because the more a person sprays on themselves, the more spray they will have to buy.
