BLASCO - Primary Sources

The following link is an audio clip of the Beatles song, I Want To Hold Your Hand. This is one of the many songs by the Beatles with an outward theme of love, and one of their more famous. In this song, the mood is a very light and happy one, and displays the wishing for a relationship on the part of the singer towards the subject. By the lyrics "oh please say to me 'you'll let me be your man'", one can infer that a relationship has not yet begun but he longs for one, and that his urge for a relationship is one based off of simple, culturally accepted way of affection, like holding her hand.

This quote (quote #6) is from the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, and said by the anti-hero of the story, Heathcliff. He speaks the quote to Catherine, the woman he has loved virtually his entire life, just after she has died of a sickness caused by emotional distress at Heathcliff's marriage to another. Contrary to modern tales of romance and most from that time as well, the male in the "relationship" in Wuthering Heights is more devoted and steadfast in his love of the female. Also, it is culturally accepted that once one's significant other or spouse dies, one should attempt to move on with his or her life, and most try, not to forget but to think less of the person, in order to dull that sort of pain. Heathcliff, on the other hand, wishes Catherine's spirit to haunt him and never leave him, and continues to sleep in her childhood bedroom, trying to still keep some semblance of her.

  1. The Beatles song is a perfect example of a commonly accepted gesture. Often when people hold hands you assume they are dating or wanting to date. This song depicts a budding romance between two people.

  2. I felt that it makes it feel as if there is something so small (holding someone's hand for instance) can create a feeling thats so big (in this case love). The lyrics make it sound almost feel like he is begging her to take him because he has such feelings for her.
