The Axe Effect

The video about axe that we found on YouTube showcases something very interesting and sexual to sell a product. This video has many different responses concerning the content, most of which is not appropriate to write or speak about because it is completely degrading to women and highlights how perverted some men are. Some comments that weren’t inappropriate were “this is my dream,” “I wish this would happen to me,” and one person said “this is stupid.”

This video really highlights the rhetoric of love in pop culture blatantly. The theme from this commercial says that if you use axe you will have more women after you than you know what to do with. Most commercials or advertisements use a few women to propose this idea, but this one in particular takes it to an extreme. This video represents thousands of half-naked women trekking through the forest, running, pushing, jumping, and swimming trying to get to one man. This is an interesting point of view because of how epic this journey seems for the women. It’s like a giant migration or hunt. The music also highlights this point and exemplifies it.

Another interesting point in the video is the man’s face. He seems excited when he sees the women, and understands that they are chasing him solely because of the way he smells. Understanding this, he sprays more on himself. The ending of the commercial has text and a voice over that confirms that’s what the man was doing. The text “spray more get more” tries to tell the audience that if you spray more AXE on yourself that you will get more women.

  1. I find it interesting that in the commercial, gender roles are kind of switched. Women are normally known to want the man to come to her, she in other words plays hard to get. In this ad, though, it's the complete opposite, the woman is putting all of her physical power into getting to the man she wants.

  2. I thought it was interesting how they used a jungle theme throughout the commercial. The music added to the theme of a chase or hunt as you said. I like that you pointed out that after the man saw all the women, he sprayed more axe on himself hoping to get even more attention than he had already. I think this advertisement will be somewhat successful because it will capture the attention of the audience and at least get them thinking about the product.

  3. I find it particularly interesting how you brought up the fact that many commercials use one or two or a few women to sell a product, but this commercial used tons of women. Perhaps they used too many women, and have overexagerated the point they were trying to make. Is it possible to overdo something like this and leave a negative thought in the consumers minds after viewing the ad?

  4. I feel that this commercial is too extreme because I would not be excited with that many women coming after me since it looks like they would want to tear me apart and share. This does show many stereotypes that would get most men to be very interesting in purchasing AXE body spray so that this fantasy could become reality for them. It is definitely targeted toward the younger high school/college student.

  5. I found it interesting how determined the faces of the women in the video clip were. I felt they looked literally like a herd of animals chasing after there prey. The images of the women seem so stereotypical, lean women with big breasts. I find your mention of the mans face very interesting and true, he knows the axe is what is making these women chase him

  6. I think using attractive women in the commercial was very effective and anyone watching is left wondering what women are running or hunting for.Not just men but even women would watch the commercial to the end.Its grabs your attention and thats what effective commercials do.

  7. I agree that it is strange that the man continues to spray axe on himself even after he is aware of the hordes of women running towards him. The attractiveness of a man who sprays too much axe is completely exaggerated.

  8. That is an idea also present in most Axe commercials also. They always depict the women chasing the men.

  9. When I watched this video, I found some interesting thinss, like using music for highlighting, and wearing different-colored clothes. In this sense, this commercial film make me feel interested.

  10. I think that the ad is so interesting. The ad is full of unrealistic images to persuade consumers. It seems that the ad is talking to the audience, " hey, if you want to be attractive, spray more! AXE is cool!!!" The ad shows that there are tens of, thousands of female running toward the male spraying the AXE product in the beach. Furthermore, the background music and the scenes of the ad is so epic that it looks like a movie trailer. It is enough that these factors and the concept of the ad play a major role to make a hilarious, but an persuasive commercial film.

  11. I found the reversal of roles interesting. Women usually want to the ones that are sought after, not the men. In this case, however, the women are in pursuit of the man. The music in this commercial added to the effect that the women were in pursuit of the man, they needed to get him.

  12. Extreme performance, which could easily draw views attention, along with the nature that men are more easily shaked by the sexual stuff help the axe did a very good job in advertising.

  13. This seems to be an effective commercial. It seemed as if the AXE didn't make the women want the man- it made them NEED the man. I agree with Beth when she says that the music added to the effect of this too. It made it seem as if the man, or the "AXE Effect", was essential to the women's survival.

  14. I must disagree that this is degrading towards women. All they are claiming is that Axe smells good and women will like the smell of it. Sure its a bit exaggerated but its not offensive. If anything its offensive to men because they're saying that if you don't smell like Axe then you won't be able to get women.
