Drew Stone- Primary Source 2

My second primary source is about aids awareness. The advertisement shows two men laying naked together, with other men around them. The ad says if the past's interfering with your relationship then you should check your love life. This ad is about safe sex and making the right decisions with your sex life. The other men around the bed are men that one of the guys that is on the bed has slept with. Therefore the other man is crossing paths with them if he has sex with him too. This is an example of how easy it is for std's and aids to spread if you do not take certain precautions. In the top left corner of the ad it says 1. No intercourse without a condom and 2. No sperm or blood in the mouth. This is a controversial ad because it relates homosexual relationships to aids. It also is a sexual picture and talks about sex with multiple partners, which could be controversial also.

  1. I think another reason this ad may be controversial is because older generations do not always accept living life as a homosexual. Mostly because they did not grow up that way and were not allowed to express their true self if they were. It was not an acceptable way of life. Although it has a good message behind it, I don't think it would be widely accepted.

  2. This ad is very controversial in the way that it portrays homosexuality. I think it will be controversial on both sides. Those that are homosexual will view this as offensive because it does suggest that aids is spread by homosexuality. On the other side will be the individuals who aren't accepting of homosexuality. When many of those people were our age, being homosexual was not something that was advertised. Our generation has brought it to the surface and therefore is more accepting. Showing the fact that if you have unprotected sex, you will also be having sex with that person's previous partners is great. It's something people should be more aware of and they should protect themselves. However, this ad won't be seen for those issues. People will notice the two naked gentlemen and form their opinions on that. They won't look for the inner message.

  3. 30 years ago it was the common misconception that you had to be homosexual to get AIDS. Since then obviously everyone knows that is not true. However it does seem that this advertisement is suggesting it. Which would be very disrespectful towards the homosexual community and would spark a lot of controversy. Do they make these controversial and politically incorrect advertisements just to attract attention to there cause? i can't say for sure, but it's worth considering the possibility that that might be the case.
