Primary summaries-Minghao

This photo is commercial advertisement for Game Boy Advance. In the left bottom it implies the Nintendo Company, which the Game Boy comes from. In this grey photo, the first thing to notice is two phrases, which are in red. The first is “screenlight” which is simply to promote the quality of Game Boy’s screen. The other is “for men” which is tending to change the misconception of the video are only for kids. Nintendo also wants to sell the Game Boy to adult men. The ad is split in half. In the left side, there is a half naked man and a woman lying in the bed of silk, which implies they are just finish the sex. The woman is sleeping while the man is playing a Game Boy with a bright screen contrasting the background. In the center of the right side is an opening Game Boy under which is a sentence “The second best thing to do in the dark”. The text is a connection between the meanings of each side. Viewers would easily consider that the first best thing for adult men in dark is sex and the Game Boy Advance is as charming as sex. This ad perfect meets the purposes of the Nintendo, which not only show the features but also reveal the applicable groups and potential customer of their product.

This is a commercial black-and-white printed advertisement for the Calvin Klein Jeans. In the picture, a girl is sitting on the legs of the guy and touching his waist with her hands while the guy sitting on the floor and holding girl’s buttock. Their action is sexually suggestive that two characters are about to have the sex. Both of them are topless and dress in jeans with eyes focus on the lens. This movement is seems to imply the viewers that they are enjoying the attractive and great time brought by the CK jeans and encourages potential customer to get CK jeans as soon as possible. The girl’s underpant is partially exposed and properly reveals words of Calvin Klein so as to emphasis this brand. The use of black-and-white scene frequently appears in advertisements of CK products. Such kind of technique highlights the pursuit of CK is being outstanding and more charming.

  1. I think the first source is also implying that if you get the Nintendo you can be just as "cool" or likely to be having sex with a beautiful girl like the one laying next to him. It implies that even older men can have fun and be entertained with their Nintendo as boys. It is pushing love for an object and promotes spending time with it instead of the girl beside him.

In relation to the theme of our class, I think that the second ad is implying that buying an item and how attractive you look can bring you love. These models are seemingly "prefect" for each other and they found each other supposedly because of Calvin Klein Jeans. Culture promotes love through objects you own and your personal appearance.

  2. In my opinion, the first advertisement mainly concentrates on persuading adults by suggesting certain images-a man and a woman on a bed. It is helpful for customer to remind that the Nintendo is also such a device for adults as well as children by watching the advertisement. Although the public considers that most adults do not prefer playing the Nintendo, the advertisement contrasts the issue by providing a sexual image.

However, the second primary source is much effective to deal with the topic of the class. A half-naked man and a woman, who are wearing a jean, hug each other. It is useful for customers to consider that they can get a similar experience by purchasing the jean. Furthermore, the tone of the advertisement is so simple and sparkling that customers easily focus on what the message of the ad is, which customers would get a chance not only to meet a beautiful or handsome-opposite gender partner but also to become luxurious and fashionable.
