Primary Sources - Michael H

This first ad is for the Volvo car, which reads "We're Just As Excited As You". In the picture, the parking brake is pulled up and with the angle of the picture, it seems to be sexually suggestive. It resembles a man's erection, which is interesting because cars cannot experience sexual arousal. This ad is telling the viewer that they should be excited so incredibly much that they should have an erection. There is one problem however, and that is conveying a message to female automobile enthusiasts; females would look
at this ad, and find it impossible to relate to.

The second ad is a Calvin Klein underwear advertisement. It shows a woman and a man who are half-naked, dressed in only underwear. It looks as if the woman is taking off the man’s underwear also. This ad is telling the viewer that this is what Calvin Klein underwear will do for you; wear this underwear and it will make you sexually appealing. This ad also turns an act of love and maybe romance into a campaign to sell underwear. The two are clearly unrelated, but Calvin Klein uses this image to sell undies.

  1. Car advertisements will go above and beyond to sell their products, especially in this Volvo ad. Although I can not relate, as Michael mentioned, Volvo believes that the viewer should be so excited for this car that they should have an erection. This advertisement is quite humorous to me actually, but I am not sure if it really does a good job at promoting the brand.
Calvin Klein are known for their seductive advertisements, as shown in this particular one. The woman seems to be tugging at the man's underwear proposing the idea that if you wear this underwear you will appealing and could get women. Although this is clearly not true, it does sell the product.

  2. When you first look at the Volvo ad, it just looks like the interior of a car. But then when you read the caption and take a better look, you can see they are using it as more. We all know that sex sells. That is why so many ads have to same feel to them. This is also the case with the Calvin Klein ad. When you look at this, you notice what is going on in the ad and then after looking at it more you realize that it is trying to sell underwear. This is a technique that many companies use even though it is not true it still works.
