Question 5

I personally don't think that this kind of ad actually does anything. As a woman, I don't find anything about this ad fascinating or compelling. It does not make me want to go out and buy the product. The idea from the commercial that women become more attractive when you consume alcohol is degrading in a way. I would like to think that men don't see it that way. It says, in a sense, that women are valued only for how attractive and sexy they are. That they are objects to a man's fantasy and mind. From a guy's point of view, however, this ad might have an effect. Any man wants to be with an attractive girl. Also, men tend to drink beer more often than women, so this ad is more aimed towards a male audience, clearly. The commercial is playing into the fantasy mind of a man to want a young, attractive, and sexy woman. The man that says you would need “beer goggles” on to be with a woman is strong and demeaning statement about women. I think the commercial does say something about society now and what we view as acceptable. In today's society, this kind of ad is perfectly normal and is viewed as okay. On the other hand, if you were to go back a few decades, this commercial would be frowned upon. This objectifying and fantasizing of women has become a norm in today's society. There are plenty of ads and commercials today that have a similar meaning. Like people always say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  1. i agree that this ad only works in todays society. i think that the ad did a terrible job at advertising the product. it worked better as an ad showing the effects of alcohol on the mind, turning any woman into his perception as attractive.

  2. I personally agree that viewers do not need to purchase beer just for seeing attractive women. I would like to maintain that this commercial need to describe beer effectively, by using some sorts of information about dangers not showing of women. Addtionally I would say reflecting some information about heartbreak in case of drinking alcohol too much would be better choice.

  3. I find it interesting that the beer advertises a way to make unattractive women seem more beautiful to young, single men; however, the same cannot be said for women being sttractive to men. In fact, a sloppy, drunk man will almost always be rejected by a sober woman with higher values, as depicted in the commercial. It is definitely inaccurate for the ad to depict two people having a potential connection in this way. In addition to this, the commercial says nothing about the beer itself, and no one will be persuaded to buy this particular brand, because any kind of alcohol can hinder someone's judgmental skills, not just the kind being advertised.

  4. I do think this ad is more geared towards the male audience. However, I do not think it was successful in selling their product. Though it uses an attractive woman as the man drinks more beer, you do not know what kind of beer they are advertising. The company should have displayed a label more effectively to get their product sold. Without knowing the product, the advertisement is unsuccessful.

  5. Everyone always assumes that only men think girls become more beautiful when they are drunk but isn't it the same the other way around? Sure they use a drunk man as the example and yes that is degrading to the woman. But in all reality it is degrading to everyone because alcohol would have that same effect on a female if she was looking at an unattractive male.

  6. To be honest, aside from some comical facial expressions the man makes and the silly music, I don't think this ad is effective for men and women. Men and women know that it is not possible for a girl to literally become sexier just because the man is drinking, and his view of her certainly would not change that drastically after one sip.

  7. I find this commercial to be quite interesting, it doesnt do anything to advertise its product and I also feel like its objectifying women. As mentioned in the presentation "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Who is to judge what men thing as a beautiful woman? I do not think this commercial is affective, although I am not the taget audience, I am not sure why anyone would want to buy a product that would effect them in a way that they would regret something in the future. Also, why drink so much alcohol to see a woman you consider "unattractive" attractive? I believe it would be more reasonable to drink little alcohol or none at all, and find someone you are actually interesed in that have qualities you are looking for.

  8. This advertisement is not very effective. It has a humorous side that will get your attention at first but it is nothing that will keep the product in a person's head. If anything this ad is just saying that when you see a girl that you think is "ugly", drink more beer and she will eventually begin to look better and better. The commercial makes you think of beer but not anything specific. Any beer could have that effect on a person.

  9. Yeah, I didn't find the ad very compelling at all either. Anyone who has gotten drunk before obviously knows that their perception is way out of whack. Any sort of alcohol could achieve this effect. The way they present the beer is interesting, basically telling people to drink beer to make others look attractive. This is not a good reason to drink beer. Advertisers should advertise a beer based on its taste and quality, not its ability to mess you up.

  10. I agree with your phrase "beauty is in the beholder". To some people that woman who the viewer sees when he is not under the influence of alcohol may be the most beautiful one. While I realize that it is just a commercial and not supposed to be really in depth, I believe it says a lot about the society it is from. People drink to be attracted to women. It is a strange concept, but one widely accepted in society and satirized in this ad. I realize it is just a joke to sell a product and in that aspect I find it to be a good ad, but I don't really think it sells the product well. I'm not convinced i should drink that specific beer.
